There are three designated smoking areas a short walk from the doors of LOH, including one across the street at the northeast corner of Colburn Park. As you approach the Green, look for a large, red brick building with white columns and a clock tower on the north side of the park. LOH is accessible from street level at the front of the building and by elevator to the Lobby and Orchestra level through the City Hall entrance on the east side of the building. Like Lebanon Opera House, the Chandler did a big renovation and expansion for its centennial, in 2007. But that project didn’t include repainting the music hall, which hadn’t been done since the 1990s, said Chloe Powell, who’s celebrating her first year as Chandler’s executive director.
Unlike Lebanon Opera House, with its larger community and donor base, the Chandler operates on thinner margins. In Powell, it has a new young director with local ties. Chandler’s reopening includes both a partnership with a community organization and a boundary-pushing classical performance. The partnership is with Vermont Public, which will hold an installment of its “Homegoings” series, hosted by Randolph native Myra Flynn, on Feb. 17. Clifford is particularly looking forward to an early-April residency by the String Queens, a string trio pushing the boundaries of classical music.

The recent renovation was entirely funded by donors as part of a campaign to raise $4.2 million for the opera house in advance of its centennial. The refresh transforms the venue into a modern theater, Clifford said. New stage lighting brings the theater in line with industry standards, he explained, and attendees can sit more comfortably in wider seats with more legroom. The Opera House seats 803, including eight transfer seats with removable armrests and two spaces for wheelchairs. The orchestra level holds 582 and there are 221 seats in the balcony, with room for up to 20 to stand in the rear of the theater. Tickets are sometimes available through artists’ fan club sites as pre-sales or special VIP packages.

The residency includes workshops and performances with the Upper Valley Music Center. “It’s pretty amazing to see what the space looks like,” Joe Clifford, the opera house’s executive director, said in a phone interview. The opera house is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and officials say the improvements will help keep the theater viable for the next century. Unless otherwise noted, shows at Lebanon Opera House are all ages. Children younger than two will be admitted free (sitting on a lap), otherwise, everyone must have a ticket.
Either way the show will start with the opening act at the advertised time and the headliner will follow. If a show is billed as “an evening with”, there is no opening act. Tickets to some performances may be returned to the box office at any time before a show as a tax-deductible donation to Lebanon Opera House. Powell and the Chandler’s board are working to put the organization on firmer footing. Over the past decade, the Chandler has had a half-dozen directors after the departure of longtime leader Becky McMeekin.
